About our woodwind program
Beginners Beginner woodwind students will learn how to create a beautiful sound on their instrument. They will learn how to create an embouchure (“ahm’ boo shoor”), which describes the formation of the mouth. The embouchure, along with the breath and airflow, determines the quality of the sound. In addition, they will learn correct posture, breathing, articulation and fingering. Instrumental care and practice habits will be discussed. Students will learn the basics of music theory including note reading, note values and rhythmic counting. Intermediate Intermediate students will expand their technical skills on their instruments with warm ups and scales. Music theory learning will include knowledge of accidentals (sharp, flat, natural), key signatures, time signatures, dynamics, slurs, ties, accents, fermatas and Codas. In addition to method book learning, basic repertoire is introduced. Students that participate in NYSSMA Solo Evaluation Festivals and All–County auditions are encouraged to prepare their pieces with our private instructors. Advanced Advanced students will be proficient in major and minor scales, chromatic scales and arpeggios. Emphasis will be placed on intonation and musical expression. Technique and musical refinement will help take the advanced student to the next level. Our private instructors can help you reach your desired musical goals including advanced repertoire. |
